Nepal is a country in South Asia between China (Tibet) to the north and India to the south, east and west, and it holds eight of the world’s fourteen highest peaks, including Mount Everest at 8,848 metres.
Land and people
Nepal has three regions: the Terai plains on the Indian border, the central hills, and the high Himalaya. More than 100 ethnic groups live here, including Sherpa, Gurung, Tamang, Rai, Magar and Newar communities, and about 90 languages are spoken. Nepali is the national language, and English is widely understood in tourist areas. A blend of Hindu and Buddhist traditions gives Kathmandu and the mountain villages their character.

Seasons for trekking
Nepal has four seasons: winter (December to February), spring (March to May), summer and monsoon (June to August) and autumn (September to November). Spring and autumn are the best seasons for trekking, with stable weather and clear mountain views. The Everest region can be trekked in winter if you are ready for the cold, and in the monsoon if you accept rain and cloud.
Kathmandu: where every trek starts
Most treks begin and end in Kathmandu. The valley has several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the old royal squares, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, and we normally spend a day there before trekking so that you can rest, check your gear and meet your guide. Mount Everest and the Khumbu
The Khumbu region in the north-east holds Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the trail to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m). Sherpa villages, monasteries such as Tengboche and teahouses line the route. Most trekkers fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,800 m) to start.
Before you travel
Most visitors need a visa for Nepal, and the rules can change, so check the current requirements before you fly. Buy travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation. Our office can advise on timing and gear.
