The classic Everest Base Camp trek takes about 12 to 14 days from Kathmandu, including the flight to Lukla and acclimatisation days. Shorter itineraries of 7 to 10 days exist, and helicopter-return options save the walk back down.
Everest Base Camp on the south side in Nepal sits at about 5,364 metres (17,598 feet). Kala Patthar, the usual viewpoint above it, reaches about 5,545 metres.
The two main seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Both bring stable weather and clear mountain views. Winter is colder and quieter, and the monsoon months of June to August bring rain and cloud.
No technical climbing is needed. The trek follows well-used trails and teahouse lodges, but it is long and high, so good general fitness and a slow, acclimatised pace matter more than prior experience.
