Everest Trekking

Everest trekking from Kathmandu means walking through the Khumbu region of Nepal to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) or to one of the valleys beside it, with permits, lodging, meals and the Lukla flight arranged by our office in Thamel.

Choose your Everest trek

  • Everest Base Camp Trek, 14 days: the classic route. Fly to Lukla, walk to Base Camp and Kala Patthar, and walk back down.
  • Everest Base Camp Trek for Beginners, 13 days: the same valley at a gentler, well-acclimatised pace.
  • Phaplu to Everest Base Camp, 18 days: starts at Phaplu in Solukhumbu and walks in through the lower hills instead of flying into Lukla.
  • Gokyo Lakes Trek, 13 days: turquoise lakes and the view from Gokyo Ri (5,357 m).
  • Everest Three High Passes Trek, 19 days: a long loop over three high passes for experienced trekkers.
  • Pikey Peak Trek, 8 days: a lower-altitude route with wide views of the Everest range.

What a typical Everest trek involves

Most days are 5 to 7 hours of walking on well-used trails between teahouse villages. The classic route climbs from Lukla (2,800 m) through Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), Tengboche (3,860 m), Dingboche (4,410 m) and Lobuche (4,910 m) to Gorak Shep (5,140 m). Rest days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche are built in, because altitude, not distance, decides how the trek feels. A porter carries your main bag, and you walk with a light daypack.

When to go

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) give the most stable weather and the clearest mountain views. Winter is colder and quieter. The monsoon months of June to August bring rain and cloud, and flights to Lukla are more often delayed.

Who these treks suit

No climbing skill is needed, but the trek is long and high. Good general fitness, steady walking practice before you travel, and the willingness to go slowly matter more than previous trekking experience. If you are short on time, see our short treks and helicopter-return treks.

FAQs

How many days do I need for an Everest trek?

The classic Everest Base Camp trek takes about 12 to 14 days from Kathmandu, including the flight to Lukla and acclimatisation days. Gokyo and high-pass routes take 13 to 19 days. Shorter itineraries of 7 to 10 days are possible but give your body less time to adapt.

How hard is trekking to Everest Base Camp?

It is a moderate to challenging trek. The trails are not technical, but you spend several days above 4,000 metres, so fitness, pacing and acclimatisation days are what make the difference.

When is the best time for Everest trekking?

March to May and September to November are the main seasons, with stable weather and clear views. Winter trekking is possible but cold, and the monsoon from June to August is wet and cloudy.

Do I need a guide for Everest Base Camp?

You need permits and sensible logistics, and a guide handles both along with route-finding, pacing and altitude checks. All of our Everest packages include an English-speaking trekking guide.

What is included in an Everest trekking package?

Packages normally cover airport transfers, hotel and teahouse lodging, meals on the trek, permits, the Lukla flight, a guide and porter service. Each trip page lists exactly what is and is not included.
