Helicopter Trek

Helicopter treks combine walking in the Khumbu with a helicopter flight, usually back from Gorak Shep to Kathmandu, so you reach Everest Base Camp on foot and skip the long walk down.

Why add a helicopter

The descent from Gorak Shep to Lukla takes three or four days and covers ground you have already seen. A helicopter return turns that into a short flight, and it also removes the risk of a delayed flight out of Lukla at the end of the trip.

Helicopter flights depend on weather

Helicopters fly in clear conditions. Mountain weather can delay a flight by hours or by a day, so plan a spare day before your international departure.

FAQs

Is a helicopter return worth it?

It saves three or four days of walking and avoids the Lukla flight queue at the end of the trek. You still spend the same days climbing, so it does not shorten the acclimatisation you need on the way up.

Can I do the Everest Base Camp trek in a day by helicopter?

You can fly to Everest Base Camp area on a day tour from Kathmandu, landing at a high viewpoint, but you do not acclimatise, and some people feel unwell at that altitude. Our helicopter tour page explains the options.

Does the helicopter flight depend on the weather?

Yes. Flights run in clear conditions and can be delayed or moved by a day. Keep a spare day in your schedule.
