Short Trekking

Short trekking packages reach the Everest region in 7 to 10 days from Kathmandu, for travellers who have limited time but still want the Khumbu valley, Sherpa villages and close views of Everest.

How the short itineraries work

A full Everest Base Camp trek needs about two weeks. Short itineraries save time in three ways: they shorten the route, they fly to or from the mountains where the weather allows, and some return by helicopter instead of walking down. The 7-day option treks to Everest Base Camp and returns by helicopter, and the 10-day options compress the standard route into a tighter schedule.

The trade-off to know about

Climbing faster gives your body less time to adapt to altitude. Our short itineraries are planned around this, but they suit people who are already fit and who are comfortable ending the trek early if the guide advises it. If you can spare the days, the 14-day Everest Base Camp trek is the safer way to reach Base Camp.

What to expect

  • Teahouse lodging on the trail and a hotel in Kathmandu.
  • Flights between Kathmandu and Lukla, which depend on weather.
  • A guide throughout, with permits and meals arranged by the Thamel office.

FAQs

Can I trek to Everest Base Camp in 7 days?

Yes, with a helicopter return from the mountain. Walking both ways in 7 days is not realistic, so the 7-day itinerary trekks up and flies back to Kathmandu.

Is a short trek safe at altitude?

Short treks climb faster, so the risk of altitude sickness is higher than on a 14-day trek. Itineraries are planned with this in mind, your guide checks how you feel each day, and you should tell the guide about any symptoms early.

What if the Lukla flight is delayed?

Flights to Lukla depend on weather, particularly in the monsoon and winter. A short trek has little spare time, so allow a buffer day before your international departure.
